Section Two

1. Muzique Conrete (8.5" x 12") This piece--actually two versions of the same piece are presented here--was inspired by NASAL RETENTIVE CALLIOPE MUSIC by Frank Zappa, which appears on his "We're Only in It For the Money" album. The technique he used to bring an assortment of precisely distorted sounds togetheris known as muzique conrete.. The first thumbnail leads to the my original visual interpretation of NRCM, etched in 1973; the materials: black india ink rendered with quill and sable brush on dry watercolor paper.

The second thumbnail leads to a retouched version; I opened it in Paint and noodled with it for a while. Mark it December, 2004.

2. Hendrix Bootleg (11" X 18") No.2 pencil on soft drawing stock. In 1973 I bought a bootleg Jimi Hendix album. The photo on the cover was one of the best of him I'd ever seen, but the music was awful--doubtful it was even him. 'Cause I didn't play the guitar, the one way I could steal the master's sexual thunder, even though he'd passed away, was to draw a picture of him. This drawing is crude, but it does show the devotion I had for him. The drawing lay in my archives for years, folded, so there is a swipe across the center of it. On another note, if you want to hear Jimi in a live, raw performance, try to get your hands on a copy of "Hendrix in the West", a posthumous release of eight live cuts. It contains excellent live versions of Red House and Little Wing. The record is out of print, but can be had.
